We purchased a computer with Christmas money a few weeks ago. Our daughters were estatic--they had been bugging us for many months and complaining that we were living in the "Stoneage", unlike all their friends. Of course one of the first things we did was get a hook-up to the internet. This has been the buzz in our house, however I'm not convinced that we have moved any farther out of the "Stoneage". In many ways the "Stoneage" has tremendous value--we spent more time reading or being outside. I'm amazed that when the power goes out for a few hours at camp how many of us sit looking at our computers wondering what we are going to do in this time. Camp is a place to come away from our routines, but for those of us who keep camp running for others, technology is part of the very fabric of what we do. The Wizard of Oz comes to mind where we are behind the scenes producing a smokescreen so that others can enjoy coming away from their routines. I guess my point is that it is important to spend time away from the buzz of our technological age so that we can really listen better. Cell phones, MP3s, portable DVDs, computers, Blackberries, and on and on it goes. Maybe I'm just getting old and am not up with all the new gadgets, but part of me longs for things that are simple, like a quiet walk in the park or on the trail by the lake.
